Toddlers in Tuxedos
Shortly after moving from England to America, my son’s 4th birthday was fast approaching. My children had just experienced their first party at a neighbor’s house in which guests were given pony rides around the yard. I started to worry about what I would do for my son’s birthday because in England I was accustomed to kids' parties being simple events.
After discussing this with a friend, I decided to go with the theme of a traditional English birthday. By this I mean that there are finger foods like mini sausages and crisps (chips)followed by jelly (jello) and cake for dessert. Party games like "Pass the Parcel" or "Sleeping Lions" are played, then the children go home with a goody bag full of sweets (candy) and toys.
A few days before the party, all but one child had RSVP'd. Then I received a phone call from the boy’s grandmother enquiring about the dress code and whether she needed to hire a Tuxedo for him. Maybe she was thinking of Queen’s Garden Parties! Well the thought of fifteen toddlers in tuxedos sure gave me a much needed laugh! Bless her heart.
